Documents concerning Boston postmasters, 1639-1897.

There is a typescript list compiled by C.W. Ernst of "Postmasters at Boston" from 1639-1891 with name, appointment (by whom and date), when service ended, and why. The typescript also provides information on assistant postmasters, cashiers, and superintendents of delivery. There is correspondence and notes by John W. Dean, John Murray Corse, and C.W. Ernst from 1885 and 1892. There is a document with "autographs Boston Postmasters" from 1797-1897 presented to NEHGS Sept 16, 1875 by Melvin Lord; and a letter by Aaron Hill [he became postmaster in 1808] dated 1806 April 22, Cambridge, [Mass.], to Thomas G. Thornton, Saco, [Me.] concerning voters in Falmouth.
